WASHI

Washi or Japanese paper is a 100% natural material made from the fiber of a still largely unknown plant, abaca (or Musa Textilis).

Abaca is a fiber plant of the banana family, indigenous to the Philippines. Cultivated for its fiber (Manila hemp) for millennia, this crop gradually fell into oblivion with the advent of new textile fibers.

Originally cultivated to design ropes for the navy, this fiber is now cultivated to create Japanese paper, Washi.

The cellulose from the abaca tree is used to make thin layers of paper, the sheets of paper are then finely cut to obtain a very fine thread. The Washi thread will then be used to weave or knit fabrics to make textile articles.

Washi is a Japanese specialty and very few weavers and knitters have the necessary know-how to make fabrics. Washi thread fabrics are mainly designed in an artisanal manner by small, confidential workshops, which makes them rare and expensive fabrics.

A LIGHT AND ROBUST MATERIAL

As with flax, the cultivation of abaca is recognized as a sustainable culture because its environmental footprint is one of the lowest of natural textile fibers.

Abaca is a relatively robust plant, this natural robustness means that we do not have to resort to the use of fertilizer and of pesticides for its culture. In addition, natural rainwater from tropical latitudes is sufficient for its cultivation.

There lightness and robustness are the most remarkable properties of this fiber, hence its use to make ropes for the navy. Abaca fiber is a long fiber less likely to break, hence its use in the navy to make ropes.

Abaca has a very good breathability, air can circulate without hindrance, this breathability helps regulate body temperature and wick away humidity, abaca fiber is ideal for operating in hot and humid latitudes.

Thanks to its structure and breathability, body humidity is very quickly evacuated. Without humidity bacteria do not have the opportunity to develop and this drastically reduces the your smells.

The lightness and breathability of abaca makes it a material thermoregulatory, body heat is released in summer and is retained in winter.

OUR WASHI FABRIC

Our Washi fabric is a particularly unique fabric, it is an assembly of Washi at 66% and of TENCEL® at 34% of 180g/m²,designed by one of the greatest Japanese Washi knitters.

This very particular fabric is an assembly of two fibers of natural origin known as reconstituted with similar natural properties so as not to alter the benefits. Thus the fabric obtained will remain naturally light, airy and odorless.

Tencel® is a reconstituted fiber obtained from eucalyptus fiber, this fiber is known for its softness and low environmental footprint. Tencel® will bring softness to the rusticity of the Washi to make it even more comfortable.

The resulting fabric is incomparably light and soft, you might even forget it on your shoulders.

OUR WASHI KNITTER

MORISHITA is a Japanese family business founded in Wakayama Prefecture in 1907 by Sentaro MORISHITA, knitter fabric made from natural materials.

The factory was completely destroyed in 1945 following the great bombing of Wakayama but was reborn from the ashes at the end of the war thanks to his son Shigeru MORISHITA.

Nobuyuki MORISHITA, heir of the family, is now the guardian of the ancestral knowledge of Washi knitting.

Having received different Washi stitches, Nobu's is clearly of incomparable lightness and character.

THE IDEAL FIT

Tired of the approximate cuts available on the market, we wanted to design our own ideal cut, an iconic and timeless cut to transcend eras.

For this we chose a straight cut with a round neckline and available in several natural materials.

But making the same cut in different materials is not easy because each material will react differently when sewn, depending on its rigidity or flexibility, we call this "movement".

To achieve this, it was necessary to create a unique pattern for each material, so as to compensate for the movement and have a single cut for several different materials.

It's now done and after multiple fittings on different body types and more than 18 months of hard work, the ideal cut is now available in four different natural materials.

HIGH-END WITHOUT AMALGAM

  • The cut is straight fitted without being too close to the body either to remain comfortable.
  • The build is 44.0 centimeters in L for men and 37.5 centimeters in S for women.
  • The length is 72 centimeters in L for men and 62 centimeters in S for women.
  • The sleeves are neither too short nor too long to reach mid-arm and the bottom of the sleeves are adjusted so that the sleeve always lies well on the arm.
  • The neck strip goes from shoulder to shoulder and not only in the neck to improve the fit of the body but also comfort in high heat.
  • The height of the collar is 1.2 centimeters without visible seams for more sobriety without compromising on its outfit.
  • The labels are made from 100% organic cotton.
  • Items are delivered in recycled and recyclable cardboard packaging.
